Kids Day for ham radio coming Jan. 5 to Morristown

Rick Wagner • Updated Yesterday at 1:28 PM

MORRISTOWN — A regional ham radio for kids event is coming next month and is free.

Morristown Hamfest, sponsored by Lakeway Amateur Radio Club, is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Walters State Expo Center. For more information, contact Rodney Webb at (423) 235-4351 or w4wreares@gmail.com or Dale Knight at (423) 273-0374 or ab4dkilo@gmail.com.

Twice a year, the club offers an event designed to promote amateur radio to youth, allowing folks to share the excitement with your kids or grandkids, a Scout troop, a church or the general public. Kids Day is designed to give on-the-air experience to young people and hopefully foster interest in getting a license of their own. It is also intended to give older ham operators a chance to share their station and love for amateur radio with their children.

Here are 22 things you can do with amateur radio, according to ARRL or the American Radio Relay League: 1. Talk around the world without the Internet or cell phones. Use your own “Internet” when the “other one” is down. 2. Send your voice, text and pictures to unusual places, both near and far. 3. Create your own network of ham radio friends and send instant text messages without cell phones. 4. Meet people from all over the U.S. and around the world, on-the-air and in person at ham radio events. Explore Amateur Radio 5. Talk through satellites or with astronauts on board the International Space Station. 6. Send messages in code by learning Morse code. 7. Be a signal sleuth, “Fox” hunt for hidden radio signals, and with GPS, GeoFox! 8. Investigate the many new combined radio-Internet communication techniques. 9. Try a new sport: Radiosport, and compete on the air for awards and fun. 10. Send a message around the world using less electricity than a nightlight. 11. Become a weather spotter and help your community prepare for weather events. 12. Use Amateur Radio to control models, robots or drones. 13. Support recovery efforts in emergencies. 14. Earn badges and patches through Scouting programs and participate in worldwide radio events and communicate via satellites.
